STUCO: Spirit Week's Fuzzy Math Refocused

The juniors were happier after learning of the score upgrade.

Sturgis Charter Public School’s Spirit Week has always ended with the grade hierarchy intact: seniors first, juniors second, sophomores third, freshmen fourth, and teachers last. This year was no different except the juniors placed fourth.
Wait. Fourth?
Fortunately for the juniors - and unfortunately for the sophomores and freshmen - there was an accidental mix-up with the final results. But, the announcement did not come until after school on Friday via Facebook.
The week long Spirit Week culminated on Friday October 28 with all grades anxiously awaiting the deliberation of results. When the results were announced, the juniors stood there shocked, expecting to place higher.

“Like many of the juniors I was thinking ‘What went wrong?’” said junior Curran Olson. “My first reaction was feeling very confused and sort of shocked, having the impression up to that point that our grade was doing very well in the events at the green and being last had never crossed my mind.”
“I feel like all the juniors just want to know why,” said Junior Anna Michael. “No one thinks it’s rigged.”
Olson had paid close attention to the count totals throughout Color Day and said the thing that “struck me the most as strange was the score that was announced placing us in fourth place as the ‘final total’ was in the 500s when I knew that earlier there was an announcement saying we had 600 points roughly.”
After the event, Olson said she calmly approached Student Council President Connor Read, Council Secretary Rebecca Saling, and Student Council Moderator Mrs. Yalden, asking for a recount of the votes. Yalden praised her for “Not [being] accusatory but just [asking] us to re-look at the numbers.”
Upon reexamining the calculations, Yalden and the Student Council realized that the scores had been incorrectly tabulated. Yalden emphasized that the corrected results do not show that the event is rigged and mentioned that any students with problems in the scoring system should come to Student Council meetings and voice their opinions.
Despite the mix-up, students in general seemed to greatly enjoy the day. Lauren Clingan said, “We had fun and tried our hardest.”
Senior Student Council member Fallin Dennen added, “I saw a lot of positive attitudes. The results don’t give a good picture. [It’s] more about the journey to get there.”
Although initially disappointed with their performance this year, the juniors are already excited about next year’s Spirit Week.
“We’re going to give it our all next year,” said junior Olivia Sequin.
