Storm

by Cooper Heilmann, staff writer

The wind blows hard against the sail,
The water lashes against the dragon’s head,
Thunder slams and booms and wails,
The men sail on ahead.

The oars splash against the water,
The ropes pull and twist and grind,
The men do not seem to bother,
They leave the far western shore behind.

The ship moves on through the storm,
The brave captain bellowing orders,
The gale pushes and fights and roars,
The men live with the salty odors.

The ship pushes on and on and on,
As the sail rips and the oars grind,
The men fight on and on and on,
With only one place in mind;

Home.

Breaking Dawn Delivers for Twihards Only

by Anna Campbell, staff reporter

I entered the movie theater with dubious expectations on the day when the first part of the final segment of the Twilight Saga opened. I was ready: my fellow reporter, Lucie Palmeri, and I were equipped with candy, an article on the movie, and pens to document every scene. I even raced through the mall to save us the best possible seats and growl at anyone who wanted to mess - however, waves of adolescent girls a few years younger than us were fierce in their attachment to The Saga, and fought me for them. We ended up a few feet away from the screen.
And then, the movie began, symbolically with Bella, the blushing bride, tottering in too-high heels. She did her whole ‘I’m just a klutzy tomboy, a lamb in love with the lion’ routine, but it was getting a little old. I fail to see the wonder in an unexceptional, dumb, unfunny teenager totally submissive to her boyfriend. That said, Kristen Stewart did her character a favor in this part of The Saga - because the first part of Breaking Dawn is mostly a horror story, KStew could use her vast collection of sulky faces and increasing confidence playing Bella Swan to a happy audience of prepubescent girls. Her acting was what I most admired about the movie, apart from the money. It was clear that none was wasted in the making of the movie, from the filming of the bride and groom’s own personal honeymooning island, to the gruesome birth of their demon child.
Bella and Ed got married, and it was cute. My fellow reporter was sobbing throughout with joy/love. The wedding decorations were nice, and her dress was pretty. Jacob, the rejected werewolf lover, came in for a cameo, and another fight with Edward, but I was more distracted by his Dirty Sanchez moustache.
They sailed away to the honeymooning island. Here Bella and Edward could finally be together and consummate their years of chastity/violence together, and in a heady ten minutes, all of Bella’s dreams came true. The script was as bad as expected;  obviously directed at prepubescents, I was a little disillusioned with Bella’s annoying, continual idiocy. She mumbled and stuttered constantly.
But then came the turning point - Bella eats fried chicken, gets sick that very morning and realizes she must be pregnant. Her tummy is already bulgy and Edward wants to abort it, seeing its tumor-like speed and growth. But Bella manages to get her way and keep the child, before they fly home, back to the Cullen family’s home. Jacob comes back into the picture, sees her, is repulsed, and flies through the forest with his vision all red in a hallucinatory video game sequence.
This is the point at which the movie turns horrific, and I was confused as to whether this was my own familiar Twilight, or some ghastly rendition of The Corpse Bride. Shots of Bella’s bruised, liver-diseased belly and zombie-like, skeletal complexion terrified me out of my seat. Ed and Jacob, my Twilight counterparts, were equally frightened. Everyone thought Bella was going to die, but she doesn’t... oops, spoiler. In a blur of morphine and scenes of Bella’s bloody body on a sacrificial altar-like hospital bed, the demon child was birthed. Many fans in the audience cooed at the anti-Christ, but I was not one of them. The baby was whisked away before Jacob imprinted on it, seeing visions of the devil baby as a beautiful woman in the future. Can someone tell me what’s wrong with a mother’s ex-boyfriend falling in love with her newborn? I guess nothing...
I was actually quite impressed with the montage, Tree of Life-style, of vampire venom overcoming Bella’s insides and burning her, etc, near the end. It was more evidence of the money put into this movie, the good director and camera people behind it. Well, I won’t tell you how it ends, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. Nevertheless, I’ll probably be seeing it again with Lucie.

Sturgis Freshman Raises $12,000 for Cancer Research

By Kevin Agostinelli, staff reporter

Matthew Cappucci

If you earned $12,000 while manning a lemonade stand for the summer, what would you do with the money? Massachusetts teen Matthew Cappucci used his $12,000 earnings to help find a cure for cancer.

Since 2006, Matthew has volunteered for the nationwide organization Alex’s Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer, which was founded by a young girl with cancer.  In his interview with kid reporter Kevin Agostinelli, Matthew shared one personal story as to why he became so devoted to his service for Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

“After I went door to door fundraising for the lemonade stand, I decided to stop into a local pizza shop to see if they could donate a raffle prize,” Matthew explained, “I met the manager; but as soon as I mentioned the word 'cancer', she began crying. She explained how her 2-year-old grandson had just been diagnosed with cancer.”

Sturgis Survival Guide: What NOT to Do at the Hyannis Green

by Kevin Agostinelli, staff reporter

The Hyannis Green
1.)  Do not hit anyone with a football, frisbee, soccer ball, empty Sprite can, etc. Believe me, they do hurt.

2.) Do NOT give your crunchy cheddar-cheese Doritos to the tiny, innocent-looking seagull. Once the other 99 well-fed Hyannis seagulls show up, good luck.

3.) Do NOT invite a hobo (or homeless person, if you prefer that term) into your history class. You can laugh all you want, freshmen, but this has happened before.

4.) If the FBI, CIA, or the NSA questions you about the whereabouts of Jeff Hyer, tell them NOTHING. No, he is not your history teacher, and no, you did not hear of his planned escape to Russia.

Breaking Dawn Delivers for Twihards

By Lucie Palmeri, staff writer

Breaking Dawn, the last installment of the Twilight series was released last Friday
Breaking Dawn, the final installment of the Twilight Saga came out last Friday and as an open Twihard, I saw the movie on opening night. Although at first I was a bit skeptical if the movie would be as good as the book, a fellow Twihard reassured me that it was the best of the Twilight movies and said that it made her remember why she fell in love with Twilight in the first place. She was right: I once again fell in love. The movie was brilliant.

Sign Up for the Holiday Elf Extravaganza!

by Kevin Agostinelli, staff reporter

Yes, there will be elves in school next month.

Need a way to get into the spirit of this holiday season? The student council is introducing the Holiday Elf Extravaganza, an event centered around gift-giving where you are the elves!
During the week of November 28 to December 2, simply go to Mrs. Yalden’s room, Room 109, to fill out a ticket, which will be used to randomly choose who your “elf” will be. While you are giving gifts to your secret elf, you are also receiving them!
On December 5, the Monday after the end of the event sign-ups, students will know to whom they are giving presents. No one will be allowed to trade students. The most important rule in the event is that each elf must give approximately $20 of appropriate gifts to their student. Please make sure that your presents are different and that your presents match what the student said that he or she likes.

As the holiday season approaches, many organizations whether religious or secular help the less fortunate in the Cape Cod area. Through Dress A Live Doll and Thanksgiving Baskets, Sturgis students and faculty too are giving back to their community.
Mrs. Botsford said, “I’ve always wanted to organize a charity drive here at Sturgis.” And now she is: Botsford is leading Sturgis advisories in the Dress A Live Doll campaign, and Sturgis involvement in this campaign has been tremendous. Out of twenty advisories at Sturgis East, fifteen are participating in Dress A Live Doll.

Boys & Girls Soccer Knocked out of State Tournament in Similar Fashion

by Kevin Agostinelli, staff reporter

This Saturday, the Sturgis Storm suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to East Bridgewater and Avon and crashed out of the state tournament.
With just 57 seconds into the match, East Bridgewater scored on a breakaway after taking possession in the midfield. Despite a valiant offensive and defensive effort by the Storm for the rest of the game, the early goal proved to be the game-winning goal in the match. Sturgis came agonizingly close to scoring late in the second half when senior Will Kinsey faced a wide-open goal, but the referee suddenly blew the whistle due to a foul in the box against the Storm. The loss officially ended the boys’ soccer season, but the squad is already optimistic about next season.
Unfortunately, the Sturgis girls’ team was also eliminated from states after their 1-0 loss to Avon on Saturday. After an injury to the Storm’s senior goalkeeper Brianne Garner, freshman Emilie Steven became the goalkeeper in the second half. Although Emilie made several key saves, Avon took a crucial 1-0 lead soon after halftime and held on to win the match. Just like the boys’ team, the girls fought and barely scored an equalizing goal, but they also came up empty.

Watch out for Stormwatch articles coming soon that will recap the entire boys and girls soccer season!

STUCO: Spirit Week's Fuzzy Math Refocused

By Meghan Agostinelli and Alicia Pollard, editors
The juniors were happier after learning of the score upgrade.

Sturgis Charter Public School’s Spirit Week has always ended with the grade hierarchy intact: seniors first, juniors second, sophomores third, freshmen fourth, and teachers last. This year was no different except the juniors placed fourth.
Wait. Fourth?
Fortunately for the juniors - and unfortunately for the sophomores and freshmen - there was an accidental mix-up with the final results. But, the announcement did not come until after school on Friday via Facebook.
The week long Spirit Week culminated on Friday October 28 with all grades anxiously awaiting the deliberation of results. When the results were announced, the juniors stood there shocked, expecting to place higher.

Girls' Soccer Reaches State After Four Year Drought

By Kevin Agostinelli, sports reporter

Nadine Perry throws the ball back in bounds last week.

Last Friday, October 28, marked an exciting day in Sturgis Storm history, with the girls soccer team reaching the state tournament for the first time in four years after their thrilling 2-1 win over Pope John Paul II. Junior Sara Sweeten and sophomore April Schaefer both scored for the Storm in the victory, which was a do-or-die game for the Storm.
In the past two weeks, the girls soccer team has faced and overcome the challenge of either winning or tying nearly all of their remaining games to qualify for states. These accomplishments included their fantastic 1-1 tie with Nantucket, which happened to be the only game in the season that Nantucket did not win.
With the leadership from seniors captain Fallin Dennen and Liz Lozada, the squad improved their record to 7 wins, 6 losses, and 3 draws. In addition, the scoring tandem of senior Erika Lind and junior Hayara Cardoso boosted the offensive production for the Storm late in the season.
After clinching for the state tourney just three days after the boys soccer team clinched, the girls soccer team will look to play their first tournament match this weekend. The date for this game has not been announced, but a win for the Storm will mark their first tournament win in team history.

Boys Soccer Make State Tourney with Win Over Chatham

By Kevin Agostinelli, staff reporter

Last week, the Sturgis Storm clinched a spot in the Division 3 State Boys’ Soccer Tournament with a fantastic 3-1 upset win over Chatham. Thanks to a pair of goals by junior Chris Dedecko and an insurance goal by junior Aidan Fitzsimons, Sturgis recorded their eighth victory of the season and celebrated their third entrance into the state tournament in as many years.
Every team in the state tournament must have a winning percentage of at least .500, and the Sturgis Boys finished with a winning percentage of .533 (8 wins, 7 losses, 3 draws). Chris Dedecko led the team in scoring with 13 goals, while Aidan Fitzsimons finished second with 11 goals. Junior Kyle Garvey finished his stellar year as goalkeeper with a total of five shutouts. The team’s improvement on both offense and defense led to their strong wins against teams such as Pope John Paul II, Cape Cod Tech, and Chatham, in the final games of the season.
The Storm are currently in the South Sectional Division 3 bracket, and their first challenge will be to get into the Round of 16 in the tournament. Their first game will be played this weekend, and the opponent and the game time has yet to be announced.
