Admin. Nukes Additional Microwaves Possibility

OPINION || By Alicia Pollard, staff writer

Senior Matt Kolton heats up his lunch this week before the lunch rush started.

In light of Sturgis’ open lunch policy, the school has provided four microwaves for students who bring lunch from home. However, the number of microwaves and their working conditions leave many students stuck waiting in a long line or eating lunch cold.
“The ratio of students to microwaves...it’s not even possible,” said Anna Campbell, a junior at East.
The ratio of four microwaves to 400 students (not counting those who buy) already felt insufficient, but with two of the microwaves not working in September for a bit, the wait grew that much longer.

Keeping Religion Out of Your Sneezes

OPINION | |  By Meghan Agostinelli, staff writer

Avoid saying "God Bless You" or face a point deduction.

Imagine you are that “ideal” student - you ask intelligent questions in class and are nothing but polite to all your teachers and classmates. One day, while in your health class, you say, “God bless you” as common courtesy after a fellow classmate sneezed. What would you do if your teacher then said, “I’m taking 25 points off your grade because you simply said, ‘God bless you’”?
A California health teacher made national news at the end of September for banning the use of “God bless you” in his classroom. But he didn’t stop there. He banned the entire practice of saying anything at all, including “Bless you.” Additionally  he went as far as penalizing students’ grades for violating the rule.

Sturgis is Tops with its 2011 MCAS Results

Sturgis is No. 1 in English; No. 5 in Math; and No. 11 in Science

By Meghan Agostinelli, staff reporter
For anyone who doubts the accuracy of the Washington Post’s ranking of top high schools in the country by ranking Sturgis Charter Public School East’s placement as No. 42 on the list, the 2011 MCAS results cemented proof of the quality of the education received at Sturgis.
“I just think we really deserved this, said Junior Olivia Sequin who sat for the statewide exam last year as a sophomore. “The MCAS results show that we can succeed in the I.B.”

Theatre Teacher Directs Final Play for East

By Sara Prygocki, staff reporter

As most of the school knows, our hard-working theatre and English teacher Mrs. Anna Botsford is dividing her time between Sturgis West and Sturgis East. Following this year she will be working permanently at Sturgis West.
One of her many jobs is being the theatre director for Sturgis Theatre Arts Guild of Entertainers (STAGE), which puts on the school plays outside of the academic theater classes. This job will be passed on to the new English and Theatre teacher Mrs. Rachel Ollagnon following the fall play.
Botsford plans to make her last play here a good one with the popular comedy “Rumors,” authored by Neil Simon. It takes place in New York City: Four couples get caught in the middle of a gunshot mystery, and hilarity ensues. The play opens in December.

West Side Story: Or, Dear Sturgis West, You're Welcome!

Ever since the announcement that Sturgis Charter Public School was going to be a plural title, we have all waited anxiously to see what spawn could come out of our neighboring school now known as Sturgis West. It’s fitting - and natural - that our converted furniture store should produce another converted-furniture-store school. Busy Hyannis Main Street separates the original East from West. It is like Berlin during the Cold War minus the barbed wire, concrete walls, nasty checkpoints, and rhetoric about the East being greater than the West.
StormWatch reporters at East decided to go and investigate the new school, and so during advisory two weeks ago they ventured across to speak to those interested in creating a West newspaper. There were almost two dozen students. The students appeared bright and inquiring, even enthusiastic. They reminded us of... ourselves. So in personality as well as origin, East and West won’t be so far apart. Unlike the two Berlins in the 1960s.

Spirit Week Starts Monday!

By Kevin Agostinelli, staff reporter

Starting Monday, October 24 and concluding October 28, Sturgis is celebrating School Spirit Week! Each day features an exciting theme that gives students a chance to show off their school spirit. Remember that a lack of involvement during these five theme days results in fewer points for the respective class.

Here is the list of each theme day:

Monday, Oct. 24 - This day is Twin or Zombie Day. No extra points will be given for “twin zombies,” so choose to dress up as either a twin or a zombie. Remember that masks or other items that cover one’s face are prohibited.

Tuesday, Oct. 25 - On Super Heroes vs. Super Villains Day, students can dress as famous super heroes or infamous super villains. Be creative!

Wednesday, Oct. 26 - On Decades Day, each class will wear clothing that fits their decade. Talk to your class representatives to see which decade your grade has!

Thursday, Oct. 27 - On Costume Day, students can simply dress as anything they please, but remember that masks are not allowed to cover faces.

Friday, Oct. 28 - The final day of Spirit Week is Class Colors Day. The colors for each grade are as follows: seniors dress in blue, juniors dress in green, sophomores dress in red, freshmen dress in yellow, and teachers dress in purple. During this day, several games will be held between the grades, such as the tug-of-war match.

Field Hockey Midseason Update

By Alicia Pollard, staff reporter

Last season, they won their first game in Sturgis history and a tie.
This year, they won their first game of the season against Southbridge with a score of 6-3 on Friday, September 30.
Abbie Titcomb scored 3 goals, Lillian Randall had 2 goals with an assist, and Kaitlin Doherty scored 1 with an assist.
“Everybody worked together, it was nice to see everybody get in the game,” said Coach Nicole Eldredge.

Coach Eldredge is the first coach in several years to stay longer than one season.
Though the 6 goals scored against Southbridge are the only goals scored yet this season, they show growth from last season, in which the team scored 5 goals total.
The goalie, Helen Titcomb, is averaging 15 saves a game.
“I’m very excited to see what happens toward the end of the season...we’re improving as a team,” Eldredge said about the outcome of the season.

After nearly a decade of seasons without a single win and revolving slate of coaches , the girls' field hockey at Sturgis is making significant progress this season.

Boys Soccer Team Eyes State Tournament

By Kevin Agostinelli, staff reporter

As the high school soccer season heats up, the Sturgis boys’ soccer team has heated up with it and has set its sights on the state tournament following the regular season.
After graduating eight of its starters last year, the new-look boys soccer team won just once in their first six games before surging back to win four straight games against Cape Cod Tech, Cape Cod Academy, Southbridge, and Pope John Paul II. Led by senior captains Will Kinsey and Luke Peterson and junior captain Chris Dennison, the squad has improved not only its record but also its team chemistry. In their first six games, Sturgis scored only six goals while giving up twelve goals. During their subsequent four-game winning streak, they have registered 17 goals and have let up just three goals. Juniors Aidan Fitzsimons and Chris Dedecko, who have scored eight and six goals, respectively, have bolstered the team’s offensive performance. Additionally, juniors Chris Dennison and Ben Duncan have provided the leadership and talent to stabilize the defense.

Hot Diggity Dog Offers Good Food at Good Prices

By John Bondarek, staff reporter

Hot Diggity Dogs is a home-style cooking restaurant located at 569 Main Street, just minutes from school. Despite lengthy waits on busy days at this American-based eatery, the food is well worth the wait, and the price is nothing to fret over.
The restaurant specializes in hot dogs and burgers, although it offers sandwiches and soups too. Dishes are named after current and retired Red Sox players, the team itself, and well-known locations at Fenway. The “Red Sox Relish Dog” ($3.30) consists of a hot dog with onions, peppers, ketchup, and a variety of spices. Another Red Sox fan favorite is the Green Monster Box Seat Special ($6.95) which includes two grilled hot dogs with baked beans and potato salad.

Auditions for the School Play

By Sara Prygocki, staff reporter

Auditions for the school play, "Rumors" by Neil Simon, had a very successful turnout. For a cast of eleven, nearly thirty confident students showed up for the event. After the greeting, she chose excerpts of the script and divvied the roles between the actors.
Following the usual routine, the hopefuls assembled into a theatre circle while the stage director Mrs. Botsford gave a short summary of each of the characters, and an overall gloss over of the play.
Although there were some ‘old faces’ in regards to theatre auditioning, incoming freshman and once-shy upperclassmen decided to participate.

The Lion King 3-D Review

By Lucie Palmeri, staff reporter

Mufasa enjoyed the movie in 3-D.

When I was little, I remember watching The Lion King movies like it was my religion. Every time my brother or sister would put the VCR tape into the machine, I would get so excited, for who could resist the catchy tunes of “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” and “Hakuna Matata” and the invigorating plot line of a lion struggling to find his identity as the king of Pride Rock? I sure could not, and as I took my seat and watched the movie, I realised that that very same excitement came back to me. Along with the excitement came the other emotions that any kid would have felt watching The Lion King for the very first time: amazement, shock, anger, sadness, joy (basically any emotion). Over all, the movie was an A- in my grade book. The only thing that stopped it from getting an A or an A+ is because it was in 3-D. Usually I don’t mind 3-D movies because most of the time it makes all the action so much more exciting in action movies, but The Lion King isn’t much of an action movie,  so the 3 dimensional aspect was a bit too much. Plus, it made me dizzy. Other than that, well done Disney. You once again have made me a happy camper.

Hold it! Boys Bathroom Vandalized Again

Hold It! Boys Bathroom Vandalized Again with Graffiti

By Ben Bressette, staff reporter

Photo by Hannah Driscoll, staff photographer

Picture this, you’re in science class, or music class, and you really have to use the second-floor bathroom. Well, girls, you’re all set. But guys, that’s a different story.
The door just used to be locked with no sign. But now there is a sign that says: “Closed for repairs.”
But what repairs? The bathroom was recently vandalized with graffiti. They originally closed it at the beginning of the year and painted over the damage, and re-opened it hoping that it would teach the lesson. But, it didn’t. It increased in the past week and a half and it remains closed while they do a full re-vamp of the space by placing mud over the damaged area, leveling it, and then repainting. It has been re-opened this week.
