Student Council Elections to be Held in May

By Meghan Agostinelli, staff reporter

It’s a year of firsts for Sturgis: a new school, the first girls’ field hockey win in school history, and the first time Student Council elections will be held in May.
From the founding of Sturgis’s Council to the 2010-2011 elections, officers and representatives were elected at the start of the school year. However, Student Council moderator Mrs. Yalden notes that, “In the past, elections took up the whole month of September, and we had no plan to prepare for Spirit Week properly and any other early events.”
With the plan devised by Yalden and approved by the council, officers and representatives will be elected at the end of May. The only void position at the end of the academic year will be the freshman representative spot. With nearly all members elected, the council will plan activities over the summer, including their new task of organizing the International World Day of Peace. Yalden mentions that this year, “the crazy hurricane day caused elections to be pushed out another week, two weeks before Spirit Week.” With this newly adopted plan, the council will have the summer and early fall to implement their ideas.
Still, like a bill passed by Congress, the proposal has its supporters and its dissenters. Current sophomore representative, Ian Bowes, who plans to run again as junior representative, agrees that Spirit Week will run much more smoothly with elections at the end of May. On the other hand, Krystal Cappola, who ran as vice-president with Omar Bennani last fall, does not think agree with the plan because of incoming freshmen. She mentioned that the freshmen have a representative as they do get to vote, so she does not believe the plan will be a success. Still, whether a supporter or dissenter, elections will be held in May this year.
