Students Give Back During Holidays

As the holiday season approaches, many organizations whether religious or secular help the less fortunate in the Cape Cod area. Through Dress A Live Doll and Thanksgiving Baskets, Sturgis students and faculty too are giving back to their community.
Mrs. Botsford said, “I’ve always wanted to organize a charity drive here at Sturgis.” And now she is: Botsford is leading Sturgis advisories in the Dress A Live Doll campaign, and Sturgis involvement in this campaign has been tremendous. Out of twenty advisories at Sturgis East, fifteen are participating in Dress A Live Doll.

Hold It! Boys Bathroom Vandalized Again with Graffiti

Picture this, you’re in science class, or music class, and you really have to use the second-floor bathroom. Well, girls, you’re all set. But guys, that’s a different story.

The door just used to be locked with no sign. But now there is a sign that says: “Closed for repairs.”

But what repairs? The bathroom was recently vandalized with graffiti. They originally closed it at the beginning of the year and painted over the damage, and re-opened it hoping that it would teach the lesson. But, it didn’t. It increased in the past week and a half and it remains closed while they do a full re-vamp of the space by placing mud over the damaged area, leveling it, and then repainting. It has been re-opened this week.

The enthusiastic student bodies - plus faculties - of Sturgis East and Sturgis West following six soccer matches on Wed., Sept. 21 on the Hyannis Green. They all participated in One Day, One Goal.

On Wednesday, September 21 both Sturgis East and Sturgis West took part in the “One Day, One Goal: Peace One Day” worldwide event that featured six soccer games at lunchtime on the Hyannis Green. Over 300 students were present.

For the second year, Sturgis joined in Peace One Day’s annual One Day, One Goal event by organizing one of the 700+ soccer matches that will take place in 200 countries on September 21. 

Peace One Day is a non-profit organization founded in 1999 by Jeremy Gilley. The organization aims to make International Peace Day an annual day of global unity and intercultural cooperation. Peace One Day’s efforts were rewarded in 2001 when the member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted  September  21 as Peace Day: the first ever day of global ceasefire and non-violence. Mr. Gilley says “One Day One Goal soccer matches celebrate cooperation, unity and the power of soccer to bring people together on Peace Day.” In addition to soccer matches, activities include various cultural events and classes in conflict resolution, global citizenship, human rights and the link between sustainability and peace.

Storm Teams’ Photos Taken as C.A.S. Project

On Feb. 2 Junior Hannah Driscoll photographed the school’s basketball teams and cheerleading squad as part of her C.A.S. requirement for the I.B. Diploma.

She proposed the activity as part of her C.A.S. portfolio to support her personal creativity and to provide a service for the Sturgis community. Not only will her efforts benefit the student athletes and parents by providing photos at no charge, but it helps Hannah learn more about photography, an activity she is passionate about.

“I chose this because of my past interest in action photography during the fall season,” said Hannah. “I took pictures and worked on my skills outdoors during last season, and worked on a slide show [for the fall sports banquet]. Now I would like to work on my understanding of ISO speeds, and exposure to get nice indoor pictures.”
