One Day, One Goal a Success
One Day, One Goal a Success!
By Kevin Agostinelli, staff reporter
On Wednesday, September 21 both Sturgis East and Sturgis West took part in the “One Day, One Goal: Peace One Day” worldwide event that featured six soccer games at lunchtime on the Hyannis Green. Over 300 students were present.
For the second year, Sturgis joined in Peace
One Day’s annual One Day, One Goal event by organizing one of the 700+ soccer
matches that will take place in 200 countries on September 21.
Peace One Day is a non-profit organization founded in 1999
by Jeremy Gilley. The organization aims to make International Peace Day an
annual day of global unity and intercultural cooperation. Peace One Day’s
efforts were rewarded in 2001 when the member states of the United Nations
unanimously adopted September 21 as Peace Day: the first ever day of global
ceasefire and non-violence. Mr. Gilley says “One Day One Goal soccer matches
celebrate cooperation, unity and the power of soccer to bring people together
on Peace Day.” In addition to soccer matches, activities include various
cultural events and classes in conflict
resolution, global citizenship, human rights and the link between
sustainability and peace.
