Student Council Presents a Dance in Neon

On Friday, January 13, from 7 -10 p.m., mark your calenders to attend the Sturgis East Neon Dance, brought to you by the Sturgis East Student Council. 

This dance, which will be held at the Federated Church of Hyannis (320 Main St. Hyannis 02601), will feature a variety of hit music, neon decorations, and best of all, black lights!

Students are encouraged to wear casual white or other light-colored clothes to “glow” under the black lights.

The price is $7 at the church entrance on January 13, but students who buy their tickets early only have to pay $5. 

See student council members selling tickets at a booth during lunch to pay early.

For this dance, only Sturgis East students from grades 9-12 will be allowed to attend. Hope to see you there!

Sturgis Basketball Schedules Announced

With the return of winter comes the return of Sturgis Storm basketball! After working hard during preseason, both the boys’ and the girls’ basketball teams will play their Opening Day games during the week of December 12-16.

All home games will be played at the Hyannis Youth Community Center.

        On Monday, December 12, the Sturgis boys’ basketball team has their first game against New Testament Christian School away at 3:30.

On Wednesday, December 14, the girls’ basketball kicks off the season with a 7:00 game against South Shore Christian Academy at the Community Center.

On Friday, December 16th, the boys will battle against South Shore Christian Academy at 7:00 at the Community Center.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the games to support their favorite team. Let’s go Storm!

"Puss in Boots" Isn't "Shrek"

Come to see the new “Puss in Boots” movie if you’re looking for a fun family movie, but not if you’re looking for another Shrek movie. DreamWorks Productions new movie, Puss in Boots works as a standalone and has no reference to the original Shrek movies.

The movie takes place in Mexico, where Puss grows up in a small town as an orphan. He is the odd man out, being a cat, and soon befriends Humpty Dumpty. They have dreams together and are the best of friends before a falling out causes Puss to become an outlaw. After a while he meets up with Humpty’s right hand woman Kitty Softpaws. Humpty tells Puss that he has changed his ways and is ready to be friends again in order to find what they had been searching for their entire lives. Soon Puss is off on the adventure of his life.

The movie is filled with classic Mexican type music, including cat dance numbers. The one thing that remains similar to the original Shrek movies is the sly hilarity that makes both kids and adults alike laugh. Antonio Banderas as Puss and Zach Galifianakis as Humpty Dumpty helped to add comedic talent to the voice actors.

Many entered the movie theatre with low expectations, expecting a cheap Shrek sequel. This film is nothing like that, with its dry humor, new characters and new action sequences defining it as an entirely different film. My only complaint would be that it took a very long time to get to the climax of the film. Overall it’s a good movie to watch with your family, and one of the best animated features of the year.
